What to Expect from Your Newborn in the Early Weeks
Congratulations on your upcoming arrival! The first few weeks with your newborn can be filled with wonder, love, and, admittedly, a bit of anxiety. As you prepare for this incredible journey, here’s what you can expect from your little one during those early days.
Week 1: Welcome to the World
In the first week, your newborn will spend most of their time sleeping. When they’re awake, they’ll need lots of cuddles and feeding. Expect to feed your baby every 2-3 hours by bottle or breast. Following your baby’s feeding cues will let you know when it’s time for a feeding.
Sleeping Patterns: Newborns sleep up to 16-18 hours a day in short bursts, waking frequently for feeds.
Feeding: Your baby’s stomach is tiny, so they’ll need to eat little and often.
Diaper Duty: You’ll be changing around 10 diapers a day, which is a good sign that your baby is getting enough to eat.
Week 2-4: Settling In
By the second week, you might notice your baby becoming more alert. They’ll start to recognize your voice and may even respond with little coos or movements.
Physical Changes: Your baby will start to regain the weight they lost after birth.
Senses: Their senses are developing, and they’ll be fascinated by the sound of your voice and the sight of your face.
Communication: Look out for early forms of communication like crying, fussing, and gurgling.
Health Checks: During the first month, your pediatrician will check your baby’s weight, length, head circumference, and general development. Don’t hesitate to ask any questions you have – no concern is too small.
Bonding Time
Skin-to-skin contact is not only comforting for your baby but also helps with bonding and can even improve breastfeeding/lactation success.
Crying as Communication
Expect some crying – it’s your baby’s way of communicating. They may cry when they’re hungry, need a diaper change, or simply want to be held.
The Importance of Self-Care
Taking care of a newborn is demanding. Remember to take breaks, accept help, and focus on your own recovery too.
